In 1837, he suffered two strokes that left him partially paralyzed. His mental powers were decreasing by this date as well. He showed a few papers to the Literary and Philosophical Society during the last ten years of life. In April of 1844, Dalton read his last paper to the society, discussing the rainfall in Manchester over a 50-year period. He also presented the data he had collected in his personal meteorological journal. Shortly after, Dalton died at his home in Manchester on July 27, 1844, at the age of 77.
